ASUU Strike: NEC Convenes as NLC Sets Four-Week Deadline

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities will convene its National Executive Council on Tuesday to reassess its indefinite strike, now in its second week, after branches voted overwhelmingly on Monday to press on despite partial government concessions on long-standing demands.

ASUU's strike bulletin acknowledged progress on issues like third-party deduction releases, promotion arrears and Earned Academic Allowance mainstreaming, but decried unresolved core grievances from the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.

Congresses at universities like the University of Abuja, Nnamdi Azikiwe and the University of Nigeria saw members back continuation, with officials confiding to DAILY POST that "the matter is far from over" pending NEC's verdict.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, in a Monday parley with tertiary unions, issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government for full resolution, threatening a nationwide shutdown if unmet. NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed honoring pacts, while analyst Nduka Odo of Peaceland University blamed "deliberate neglect" for recurrent walkouts, urging treatment of education as "national emergency" over "expenditure."

As students idle and parents fume, the NEC huddle could tip the scales—suspension or escalation—in a saga eroding Nigeria's academic fabric.
